Home to the earliest modern human remains found in Australia, and possibly the world. Mungo Man had been buried and covered with red ochre. Mungo Lady was cremated more than 40,000 years ago. It is also one of the richest fossil footprint sites ever found.

July 2024
Dates: Sat 6th– Sat 20th July 2024 inclusive
Participants: Max 6 vehicles, Min 4
Trip Leader: TBD
Trip Planner Phil Radoslovich
No towing please and no pets
Proposed Route: – Madigan Line (West to East) then to Birdsville via QAA then to Adelaide via Walker’s Crossing (if open) or Birdsville Track
Notes: This year marks the 85th Anniversary of Madigan’s trip across the Simpson in 1939 so it seems appropriate for LRRSA to undertake this route across the Simpson. The concept is to head up toward Central Australia largely on the bitumen before taking the Painted Desert road to Oodnadatta. From there we’ll swing past Mt Dare before heading to the start of the Madigan Line at Old Andado Station. It is over 720km from Mt Dare to Birdsville via the Madigan Line. All vehicles will need sufficient fuel to cover 1000km without refuelling in arduous conditions. This equates to approx. 200 litres depending on make model and type of engine.
Deposit: We will be seeking a deposit (amount TBD) to secure a place as there will be upfront costs such as permits and Sat. phone registration, which will need to be in-place prior to departure.
